20 Signs You're an Outdoor Swimmer

Love taking to the cold water? Think of your beloved wetsuit as a bit of a second skin. Think no weather is “bad weather”? You’re one of our people!

As an open-water swimming lake in Surrey, we’re thrilled that wild swimming and cold water immersion have grown in popularity recently… But are you fully converted to the wild swimmer lifestyle? If you find yourself identifying with any of these 20 signs, chances are you’re in the club - and we’re so happy to have you here!

1. You’d rather swim in open water than in a pool

First up (and it may seem obvious to some!), is when you start to notice that you’d rather swim in open water than in a pool. Whether you’re itching to ditch the chlorine, or you’d just rather spend more time outside, this is a sure-fire sign of a brewing outdoor swimmer.

2. You’re happy with cooler water temperatures

Though the temperatures of the open water may feel cool at first, once you’re a seasoned outdoor swimmer, you’re likely to start enjoying the refreshing temperatures.

At Divers Cove, many of our swimmers opt to swim with us year-round to enjoy the cold water immersion benefits every season has to offer.

3. Your mood is boosted

Did you know that outdoor swimming can actually help you to feel happier? The exercise (especially when combined with the cooler temperatures!) can provide a healthy dose of natural endorphins.

4. You feel more energetic

And what comes hand in hand with a better mood and endorphins? You guessed it - improved energy. Many open water swimmers find that they see a rise in alertness and energy levels after their swims, with regular cold water immersion improving mental clarity.

5. You’ve noticed improved focus

As well as having more energy, you may also find that the mindful nature of outdoor swimming, combined with the cold water exposure, helps you to feel more focused.

So, if you find yourself drifting off at work, cold water exposure might help!

6. Your stress levels are reduced

Regularly gliding through open waters puts you entirely in the present moment - often meaning that you find yourself feeling more relaxed post-swim.

Additionally, the initial shock of immersing yourself in cold water produces dopamine, which can help reduce feelings of stress.

7. You’re tempted to swim, whatever the weather

Whilst many people love a dip in open waters in the heat of summer abroad, true open water swimmers know that, with the proper equipment, wild swimming really is a year-round hobby.

Interested in taking a dip in icy waters? We offer Wim Hof Fundamentals courses throughout the year, as well as winter swimming for our Gold and Silver members

8. You love spending time in nature…

Arguably, one of the main selling points of wild swimming is exercising surrounded by beautiful nature.

Our lake is the perfect place to swim surrounded by Surrey’s beautiful flora and fauna, all whilst looking up at clear skies - what could be better?!

9. …And every time you pass an open body of water you’re a bit tempted to jump in

We’ve all been there. Regular open water swimming makes you feel connected to nature in a completely unique way - meaning that, when you see a new open water swimming spot, the temptation to go for a dip is high.

Are you looking for a new place to try wild swimming near Reigate? Based in Godstone, Surrey, we’re just a stone’s throw away from you!

10. You actually find yourself embracing the cold

When you’ve started regularly taking the plunge into icy waters Wim Hof style, you’ll probably find that Surrey winters no longer feel so cold - in fact, you might even find yourself embracing the chill.

11. You’d rather exercise outside of the gym

Whether you’re trying wild swimming alongside your regular gym routine or as a low-impact alternative, chances are that after a couple of wild swimming sessions, you’ll find yourself sold on outdoor exercises, like walking, cycling or open water swimming.

12. You’re no stranger to swimming next to the odd fish or duckling

Though it might feel a little bit daunting when you first spot a fish next to you in wild waters, in time you’ll likely realise that spotting local wildlife is actually one of the biggest pleasures of outdoor swimming!

13. You find yourself switching the shower to cold

Who says you can only feel the adrenaline rush of cold water in your local open water swimming venue? If you’re looking to get your cold water immersion fix outside of swimming hours, then switching your hot shower to cold is a great way to get a natural dopamine fix. Plus, it’s a great way to start your day with more energy!

14. You’re happiest in your swimming gear

Is the highlight of your week donning your wetsuit and swim cap? You’re not alone!

15. You’re not afraid of cold feet

Are the days of dipping your toe in cold water long gone? If you’re finding yourself  easily fully immersing yourself in wild waters - you guessed it, you’re an outdoor swimmer!

16. 12C water temperatures feel warm

Known for being the start of our summer season, but still cooler than a heated swimming pool, if you’re a year-round wild swimmer, you’ll know that 12C temperatures do start to feel warm.

17. You find yourself with less coughs and colds

Swerved the office sniffle? Kept that nasty cold circling round your child’s class at bay? Cold water immersion may be the one to thank!

The shock of being in cold water encourages your body to produce more white blood cells, which can help your immune system work to defend you against illnesses.

18. You’re no stranger to a hot drink on the shore

If you’re a regular wild swimmer, chances are that your post-swim hot drink is one of the best parts of your visit. Bonus points if you get a delicious cake or snack too!

19. You’ve noticed your sleep patterns improve

Whether you’re finding yourself drifting off easier, waking up less in the night, or just feeling generally more energised, this is likely due to regular wild swimming. The cold water, combined with regular exercise is ideal for getting a decent night’s sleep.

20. You’ve found yourself bonding with other wild swimmers

Last but not least… You’ve found a wild swimming community - whether it’s a buddy, a group of swimmers or even a regular open water swimming venue that’s now your go-to.
